Photography is the science and art of making images by recording light or other electromagnetic radiation. It is utilized in numerous fields of science, manufacturing and business. Its more direct uses include usage for art, medical, film and video creation, recreational purposes or hobbies, etc.

Don’t you often think that the night is much more alive and richly colored than the day?

Do you think it is difficult to capture that favorite moment when the breeze is just rustling the leaves of the tree in your garden or the moon playing hide and seek with you?

There are a lot of techniques and procedures that can be utilized to take dynamic photos of the night sky, including clicking the stars as you see them, the time-pass motion of the phases of the moon as moves over the sky throughout a night, etc.

Let us take an example:

Shooting the moon

To shoot the moon along with the foreground landscaping can be  atricky task. Too much exposure to the foreground might result in the moon being overexposed and too much exposure to the moon might result in darkening the foreground. To avoid these overexposures of the moon or the foreground, the best solution might be to create multiple exposures or composites. But the question arises is, how can this be done?

  • Image overlay-There are a couple of ways that you can add the moon to another picture for an interesting composition. This is done by capturing the moon (in this case) first and then the surroundings and combining them in-camera.
  • Post-production composite- Another technique which can be used is photographing the moon and the landscape as two separate images and then combining them using an image editing program. But to achieve this successfully and get a realistic look you need to the same focal length for both the images.

A few tips which might be helpful when capturing the night sky might include:

  • Avoid areas which polluted like metropolitan cities
  • Charge the batteries full so that they do not drain out in the middle or cause any trouble
  • Use tripod stand and cable release. Take a few test shots after you adjust the focus so that you do not miss your moment.
  • Zoom in the images on the LCD to check their sharpness.
  • Make a series of exposures
  • In case you’re going out to explicitly shoot the moon, look into the phases of the moon, so that you are aware of what time the moon will rise and setting each evening and you can plan your shoot. Also take note of the course it will take in the sky to plan the composition.

So in case you have not tried night sky photography, all you need to do is grab your camera, charge your batteries, pick your tripod and reach out to the nearest place you believe will be able to satisfy the photographer in you. And to mention; a camera catches more than just the eye, so why not make the best use of it.
